Williams has been fascinated by small groups of musicians performing since experiencing an event in the foyer of the Barbican in 1989 and has been exploring the subject ever since. Williams prime aim is to integrate the gesture of the figure with the music they are playing. As music exists in time and painting is two dimensional, Williams finds ways to evoke the idea of the music. Careful listening and making written notes about her response to the music produces a starting point regarding the kind of colour, composition, tonal balance and marks to use. Colour, shape and line predominate, to achieve some sense of depth in the painting - which could indicate a sense of time passing. - Source: Jane Harker Williams.
