Born in Maida Vale, London in 1944 to Irish parents, Thomas O'Donnell was a civil engineer & steel fixer by profession and also an accomplished artist. O'Donnell worked in construction in the Middle East before returning to London where he was employed on various engineering projects including the Millennium Bridge designed by Sir Norman Foster.
O'Donnell married his wife Rosemary in 1995 and upon his retirement they moved to Uckfield, East Sussex where O'Donnell set up his art studio. O'Donnell's works of art were inspired by the Old Masters traditions, extending to abstract, post-impressionist and modernist compositions.
Post-Impressionists extended Impressionism while rejecting its limitations. The post-impressionists such as Cezanne and Van Gogh continued using vivid colours, sometimes using impasto (thick application of paint as in O'Donnells work of art) and painting from life. More inclined to emphasize geometric forms, distort form for expressive effect and a sometimes unnatural or modified colour the modern masters influence on O'Donnell is evident in this evocative "post-impressionist" work of art.
Thomas O'Donnell died in Jan 2020 in the Princess Royal Hospital, Haywards Heath, West Sussex, United Kingdom.
