Born in Manchester in 1933, Butler studied sculpture at the Manchester School of Art and later studied at Edinburgh College of Art. Travelling to Italy in the 1950's Butler also studied with the celebrated Italian sculptors Marino Marini (1901 - 1980), and Giacomo Manzù (1908 - 1991) at the Brera Academy in Milan.
In 1960 - 1963 Butler taught sculpture in Nigeria.
Butler returned to Scotland in 1963 taking up a post at Edinburgh College of Art from 1963 - 1989. Butler was one of the country's leading figurative sculptors, concentrating on the human figure. Bronze was his preferred medium, but Butler also worked in stone and wood.
Butler was elected a member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1977 and later won the McFarlane Prize for a life size female sculpture at the Royal Glasgow Institute. Butler was also a member of The Paisley Art Institute.
After travelling in Italy and later in Nigeria, Butler opened his studio in Stockbridge area of Edinburgh and worked there up until his death in 2017.
